CHICAGO — During Memorial Day weekend, this city reopens its Lake Michigan beaches, regular fireworks displays start at Navy Pier, and the downtown streets and spruced-up Riverwalk are crowded with tourists.
But the holiday weekend is often seen here as the start of heightened violence as well. That has been particularly worrying this year to community leaders and city officials, as they grapple with a rise in gun violence that has traumatized some neighborhoods and left city officials searching for new ways to subdue street crime.
DENVER – Three men with known ties to Denver-area gangs were arrested late Monday night for illegally selling firearms – many of which were stolen during residential burglaries.
When we read an article like this, we have to wonder how skewed someone’s moral compass is that they thought it alright to gun down and kill a 9-year child. Although this happened in Chicago, the issue is real and can happen here in Denver, if we don’t continue to work against this kind of violence in our communities. Don’t discount the brutality associated with survival. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family ofAntonio Smith, Jr. and the Chicago community for having to endure such violence and pain.
